Who can forget Sarah Palin's speech to the Republican Convention in which she accepted the nomination as John McCain's running mate?
Joe McCain, John McCain's brother, gave an insider's account of the speech in an article in The Australian of September 16 entitled The real barracuda.
In this article, Joe McCain revealed that the joke Palin told about hockey moms who, unlike pit bulls, wear lipstick, wasn't in the script. Indeed, she went so off-base during her speech that eventually the teleprompter operator decided to turn the thing off.
For the speech of her life, that demonstrated enormous self-confidence.
Lounge Lizard watched her as she spoke. He noted that she was a very fit and healthy looking person and that she was totally at ease with herself, her family and with being an American. She betrayed not the slightest hint of nerves.
She not only preaches conservative values but the choices she and her family have taken in life's journey demonstrate to ordinary Americans that she lives by those values.
And that drives the left totally nuts.
Here's an article that highlights what this latest election is really all about - a culture war between what the writer calls Left-Wing Liberals and Traditionalists: The Culture War's Decisive Battle has Begun, by Herbert E. Meyer.
This article is written from a conservative point of view and provides a window on a particular cast of mind that's totally beyond the ken of many purportedly sophisticated people.
William Katz also identifies Sarah Palin's importance in the Culture Wars in his article entitled One of our own made it.
Ralph Peters, who writes for the New York Post, likewise fully identifies with her: Our Sister Sarah Palin's Anti-Elitist Charm. Of course, it may help that he was a former lieutenant-colonel who started his military career as a private.
The attacks on Sarah Palin by the left-wing media have been relentless. They've gone berserk. Take the Bill Maher show for example. The hatred is beyond belief. Comedian Sandra Bernhard suggests Palin would be raped if she entered Manhattan. Lovely, aren't they!
Comedian Evan Sayet often says that Democrats think Republicans are not just stupid (that's a given) but positively evil.
If you believe the left, Palin is an ignoramus who could never successfully run an administration with over 15,000 employees, revenues exceeding $US 12 billion per annum, net assets of over $US 50 billion and succeed in gaining an approval rating of over 80% in her home state.
Right-wing talk-back radio in the US is rallying to counter the vitriol, as demonstrated by Dean Barnett's discussion with the Weekly Standard's Jonathan Last on September 19.
NewsBusters also busted a recent attack by MSNBC's Keith Olbermann.
Sometimes left-wing media comes unstuck. Former Democratic Senator from Alaska and 2008 Presidential candidate Mike Gravel was interviewed recently on a left-wing radio show, but the interviewers got an unwelcome surprise.
A friend of Lounge Lizard lived for many years in the USA and has dual citizenship. Although he has a doctorate from Harvard and was a professor at Cornell, he's totally politically incorrect. Perhaps it's because he did some hunting when he was younger. In a recent email, he said:
John McCain will lead Americans to fight for their national soul. Sarah Palin will carry the Flag. (Solzhenitsyn was right about Harvard and, by extension, the New York, Washington and San Francisco intellectual elite.) Listening to McCain's stirring acceptance speech I am moved to say that, unlike Michelle Obama, I am proud to be an American. (This gets me into a lot of arguments.)
Solzhenitsyn railed against Western hedonism and licence, which he asserted was the inevitable consequence of the secular, individualist humanism now fashionable in academe, which seeks to remove any spiritual foundation from modern Western society. He asserted that Russia was not, and never would be part of the West.
We all live in our particular bubble and adopt attitudes that conform to the others in our bubble. So it's not surprising that there are some purportedly well-informed people who not only haven't met but can't imagine that there could be any truly intelligent person who would think differently from them.
Lounge Lizard's friend told him that the denigration of Sarah Palin reminded him of his first-hand experience of observing two groups of friends, both groups being sophisticated, well-educated economists reading the same professional literature, one group living and working in Brussels, the other living and working in England.
My European friends unanimously and vigorously criticized Mrs. Thatcher when she objected to Britain's EU Common Agricultural Policy levies on the basis that British taxpayers should not be required to subsidise French farmers. My British friends, however, unanimously supported Mrs. Thatcher with equal vigour.
Lounge Lizard can imagine the distain that "sophisticated" Europeans would have had for this mere grocer's daughter who had by some mischance risen to become Prime Minister of Great Britain.
The difference between the two groups stemmed from the daily subtle but relentless bombardment by their respective national news media - TV, newspapers and radio. The two groups lived in their own respective bubbles and could not hear the arguments of the other side.
My own experience is of living and working in the US North-East, watching CBS and NBC and reading "All the News that's Fit to Print" in the "Newspaper of Record" - in other words the New York Times - only to discover a decade or two later that these sources (as well as local Australian sources such as the Fairfax papers and the ABC) are inherently biased, now require me to regularly explore numerous on-line newspapers and TV news channels on Foxtel, such as Fox News Channel, in order to separate news from propaganda. We are fortunate in having these competing sources of news.
Of course, Lounge Lizard is completely unbiased, which is why he supports the sentiments voiced in the YouTube video I'm voting Republican. His left-wing friends all understand why.
