George Will vs. Stephen Colbert & On Obama
Conservative Lion, George Will, enters the liberal Colbert Den, with surprising results (H/T: Hot Air):
One thing I would like to say is that whilst Will is right about freedom, humanity being hewn of crooked timber and whilst his delivery is decisive, it is cold. This is something conservatives (and libertarians) have to fix if we would like to have a political future.
People don't read books any more. People don't mull ideas any more.
They watch movies. They listen to music. They dance till they can dance no more. Because each of these taps straight into their emotional core without cerebral pre-processing. No effort, much pleasure. Obama's rhetoric plays right into this:
I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal.
No substance or ideas. Pure uplifting emotion that requires no cerebral pre-processing.
Some conservatives / libertarians believe that we need new creative ideas . And this might be a small part of the solution. But mostly, conservative / libertarian ideas are just fine. What we need is hone our pitch. Play the ball in the ground we are playing, not the ground we want to play in.
Conservative / libertarian ideas need a refashioned delivery platform. The left has already found its prototype through Obama.
